In July 1977, the Lord brought Rev. Valson and Laly Abraham to the Los Angeles area. The week after they arrived, they were already engaged in home prayer meetings and teaching in various churches throughout the area. The home prayer group was composed of four families from Pasadena and the surrounding area, which met twice or thrice monthly.
Even before the Abrahams arrived in California, Valson Abraham had teaching ministry in different parts of country, especially on weekends. This came in addition to his studies at Fuller Theological Seminary.
In 1982, the Abrahams moved to the Alta Loma area where they began to assemble some families for prayer twice a month in their home and other homes. In 1987, for a few months, Valson did not travel since his wife, Laly, was having a difficult pregnancy and was bedridden most of the time. During that time, he assembled the ten families that had been gathering together and discussed the formation of a church.
The church was officially incorporated by Rev .T. Valson Abraham and named India Christian Assembly (ICA). It became affiliated with the India Pentecostal Church.
After the birth of his son Santosh, Valson Abraham returned to his extensive travels. This led to having different students from Fuller Theological Seminary assisting in the church ministry. (Those who assisted at various times in ministry included Evangelist John Thomas who was ordained as pastor at India Christian Assembly. Also assisting from 1992 was Rev. Dr. P.A. Philip and later, Rev. George Kuruvilla, both students at Fuller Seminary. All these served only in part-time or interim positions. Another student from Fuller Seminary who attended and was very active in the church was Mathews George who was ordained in 2006 and now serves as an associate pastor of an American church in Tennessee.)
In the late 1980s, the young fellowship began to rent facilities in different churches, a practice that has continued to the present day. For the past fifteen years, the fellowship has met at the premises of the United Methodist Church at Norwalk.
In April 2000, Alexander John, was brought to the US to assist as the first full-time resident pastor of India Christian Assembly. A graduate of India Bible College (IBC), he served on the IBC staff as church relations liaison and also as secretary of the Pentecostal Young People's Association. The church has grown and today, ICA has 48 families and several singles, who make ICA their home church.
From beginning, India Christian Assembly has tried to reach people from different backgrounds. The Lord has helped ICA reach out to diverse language groups from India. On any given Sunday, ICA has at least 8 dominant languages represented in congregation. Services are conducted in English, but songs are sung in different languages. If someone wants to share, he is free to speak in his first language, which may be translated for the congregation. The church also has a few Americans who attend.
ICA emphasizes the support of missions in India. The fellowship has helped to build churches in different parts of India. Presently, ICA is focused upon building churches in the states of Orissa and Nepal. They are also helping to build a church in Hyderabad.
Most of ICA's present membership comes from non-Christian and nominal Christian backgrounds. Only four families come from Pentecostal or other Christian backgrounds. In every service are visitors who come from non-Christian backgrounds. Therefore, the services are designed to present the gospel to nominal Christians and all others who profess to follow other religions, as well as giving solid spiritual food for more mature believers. Deacons reach out to those who are visitors. ICA has a thematic teaching approach.
Every year, India Christian Assembly hosts an annual retreat to minister to people in depth and to allow them an extended opportunity to wait upon the Lord. Regardless of spiritual background, these retreats have become enriching times, bringing people closer to the Lord.
ICA stresses the importance of fellowship to strengthen spiritual growth. Many meaningful and important bonds are formed over the weekly snack times and monthly dinners.
ICA recognizes the effectiveness of small groups that meet regularly and encourage one another. Regardless of background, each person is encouraged to join a small group.
ICA is blessed with an active group of young adults with a strong interest in missions. Some of our young people have taken mission trips to India and other countries.
Ladies of India Christian Assembly are also very active in prayer and missions. Every year, they raise thousands of dollars for evangelism and church planting work in India.
As we celebrate twenty years of ministry at India Christian Assembly, we thank God for his grace and ask His favor for another twenty years of fulfilling and growing ministry in the Indian community of Los Angeles and beyond.
